Diabetes

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes, often referred to as diabetes mellitus, is a metabolic disorder characterized by excessively high blood glucose levels (sugar). Glucose comes from the foods and is carried by the bloodstream to cells, where it's used for energy. Insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, plays a crucial role in regulating blood sugar levels.

There are two categories of diabetes. Type 1 is an autoimmune condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. Type 2 diabetes is characterized by insulin resistance, where the body's cells do not respond effectively to insulin. It is often associated with lifestyle factors like obesity, poor diet, and physical inactivity.

While the medication and treatments for each of the two categories differ, Continuous Glucose Monitoring Devices help patients in both categories. It is an advanced technological device that has replaced the traditional ‘finger-prick’ method to monitor and manage blood sugar levels at any given time.

Insights into the Diabetes Market

According to Grand View Research, in 2022 the global diabetes devices market was valued at USD 28.1 billion with the expectation to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.5% from 2023 to 2030. An increasing adoption of insulin delivery devices and rising prevalence of diabetes are driving market growth. The driving factors for an increase in diabetes are aging, obesity, physical inactivity and unhealthy lifestyle.

How do Continuous Glucose Monitoring Devices Work?

A CGM is a sensor utilizing advanced software that monitors blood glucose levels continuously 24/7. Paired with a readout display, phone or dedicated instrument, this allows patients to quickly scan the patterns of their blood sugar levels over the course of a few hours or days. Since diabetes is becoming one of the most prevalent health conditions in present times, Continuous glucose monitoring devices are an effective way to monitor and manage blood sugar levels for people prone to this condition.

AMETEK EMC Manufactures Components for Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) Devices

AMETEK Engineered Medical manufactures advanced technology sensor components for different types of continuous glucose monitoring devices for its customers.

Some of these sensors are precision-manufactured with laser-welded, titanium-based components that are 100% safe to be implanted in the patient's body for monitoring blood sugar levels. With regular technology advancements, manufacturing processes have been adapted to the latest and improved technologies. Other sensors are made with precision ablation of the wires and fine plastic parts that are critical to the efficacy of the CGM devices.

AMETEK EMC’s expert brand Avicenna is mainly involved with laser ablating the coating on the engineered wires that sense the body fluids which are reflective of blood sugar levels, underneath the skin. In addition to the wires, Avicenna ablates fine plastic (PEEK material) for glucose monitoring devices.

The Laserage brand focuses on metal cutting and welding including the components for diabetes sensor assemblies. Equipped with a fleet of over 40 laser systems utilizing over 50 lasers and driven by a team of 100+ committed employees, Laserage carries the ability to turn the most challenging project into reality.

High Quality Biomaterials

AMETEK EMC contributes to the manufacturing of diabetes implants and devices with industry-approved and standardized biomaterials.

The majority of implants are made of Titanium and titanium alloys, while other implants are made of stainless steel for durability. In addition to metal implants, AMETEK EMC also works with non-metal implant materials including PEEK, alumina, zirconia, and others.

These biomaterials are reliable and approved by the industry. To offer patients the best care for diabetes, the majority of implants are made from biomaterials such as metal, plastic, and ceramic to give precise resistance, strength, and durability to the device.

Quality Assurance

AMETEK EMC utilizes the latest technological advancements in precision laser processing. Clients benefit from multiple advantages including advanced engineering and more than 30 years of experience in the industry. Precision cutting of tubes and sheets as well as precision welding with lasers are key capabilities. This combined with technological and engineering expertise, AMETEK EMC provides high quality solutions to standard diabetic end-products as well as custom solutions for clients specific to their project requirements.
